Event Description:
Canyon, Texas—Academy of Country Music nominated vocalist Lionel Cartwright will speak and perform at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6 in Legacy Hall at West Texas A&M University. Sponsored by the WTAMU Guest Artist Series, Cartwright’s appearance will kick off the South Central Broadcasting Society annual fall conference, hosted this year by the WTAMU chapter of the National Broadcasting Society. Cartwright began his musical career in the late 1980s, rising to fame in 1991 when his song, “Leap of Faith,” reached number one on the country radio charts. Since then, he has released three studio albums, written and produced for various other artists and composed scores for over 100 television shows. In 1990, Cartwright received a nomination for Academy of Country Music New Male Vocalist of the year, after three additional songs, “Give Me His Last Chance,” “I Watched It All (On My Radio)” and “My Heart is Set on You,” surfaced in the Top 10 on country charts. Today, Cartwright continues his work through writing, performance and speaking as he pursues new opportunities to express himself creatively in the constantly changing music industry. “Lionel is one of the most talented songwriter/musicians that I have ever had the opportunity to work with,” said Randy Ray, Director of Broadcast Engineering at WTAMU. “He is a very genuine person and a gifted speaker that brings a unique approach to sharing his expertise on the media business.” Cartwright is expected to address topics including the changing music business and its impact on other segments of the media, from the perspective of a creative individual who has found success in a profit-driven world. In addition to a musical performance, Cartwright will also offer input on making the best of every opportunity. Following Cartwright’s performance and lecture, attendees may participate in fair-themed activities and enjoy hamburgers grilled by the Street Automotive Group at the WTAMU Stanley Schaeffer Agriculture Education Learning Lab. For more information regarding Cartwright’s appearance, contact Dr. Emily Kinsky.
