Event Description:
Last November, the City of Amarillo and Amarillo Chamber of Commerce proudly launched the Buy the Way, Keep It Local (BTW) campaign. 2018 has been a great year for sales in Amarillo as we have had a steady uptick in local sales tax collections, which means people are buying local.
To keep this momentum going, we are planning the first-ever Lovin’ Local Shopping Day on
October 13
. This initiative will encourage our community to exclusively shop local for a one-day period to support our economy and businesses.
Shopping local is critical for our local businesses, entrepreneurs and economy. In addition, the sales tax revenue directly benefits the entire city by enhancing such important initiatives as public safety and streets. If each of our 79,000 households redirected $100 from online shopping to local retailers, sales tax collections would increase $118,500. Redirecting $1,000 per household generates an additional $1,185,000. These increases translate into the ability to hire an additional 16 police offers or sealcoat an additional 39.5 miles of a 2-lane residential street. Shopping local makes a difference!
We are encouraging local retailers and shopping centers to be innovative by attracting customers to their businesses with activities or incentives on Oct. 13. The BTW team will be launching, at no cost to local retailers, a comprehensive social media and marketing campaign to promote all the events. Customers will be encouraged to take photos of their local shopping experience and post to social media, which will enter them into a drawing for the grand prize two round-trip, non-stop tickets to Austin on Via Air.
We hope that your business will participate in Lovin’ Local Shopping Day. Please contact
PublicCommunications@amarillo.gov
to let us know about your business’s plans to participate. This is important so we can promote your participation ahead of time on the
BTW webpage
and the
BTW social media
campaign and encourage shoppers to head your way on Oct. 13.
We look forward to hearing about your plans to love local shopping in Amarillo!
