Event Description:
Jason Riddlespurger of the Amarillo Police Department will speak about their C.I.T. program at our next NAMI TX Panhandle meeting. The mission of this unit is to provide compassionate mental health service to anyone in need. For years, CIT has consisted of officers who have volunteered their time to the team as well as managing their duties and assignments as patrol officers. From its onset, the CIT program was a great success and it has provided assistance to thousands of Amarillo residents, a need which only grew as time went on. To answer this growing need, it was determined that the unit should to be further developed and staffed full-time by a select number of committed officers. In October of 2016, the formal decision to make the CIT unit a separate, specialized unit was reached. As a result, seven officers were tasked with forming and shaping the future of the CIT program. They have dedicated countless hours of training, collaboration, and committed follow-up procedures to this especially complex project, where the mentally ill are often forgotten, ignored or victimized. The effectiveness of the program is built on a strong partnership between law enforcement, mental health provider agencies and individuals and families affected by mental illness.
