Event Description:
Business leaders, parents, healthcare professionals and church leaders will take an in-depth look at the ways an entire community can work together to raise a strong future workforce. ___________________ The “Texas Miracle” has become a common description for the state’s vibrant economy and successes. While we have much to celebrate, meeting the needs of our current workforce and providing our children with a solid educational foundation are critical to maintaining opportunity and potential in Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle. Fortunately, there is a straightforward solution that will create the best opportunity for educational success, while solving our most difficult workforce challenges — access to quality early education for all children. When you provide access to quality early childhood education across a community, you are overcoming both workforce and educational obstacles. On April 4-5, Mayor Ginger Nelson will host Fort Worth Mayor, Betsy Price for a Mayor’s Summit: Zero to 5 Summit: How a strong early learning system can change our future workforce. The Mayor’s Summit will take an in-depth look at the ways an entire community can work together and unlock the secrets of raising a strong future workforce. Dr. Ron Ferguson (Harvard) will speak on the importance of meeting the needs of our current workforce and providing our children with a solid educational foundation. Mayor Betsy Price will share the background of Fort Worth’s program, The National Collaborative for Infants & Toddlers, in which Tarrant County has been selected as one of three national models for early education. Attendees will learn the science behind how a strong early learning system will hardwire a child’s brain development and boost cognitive and social-emotional development; while also discovering the Five Basics that everyone in our community can do NOW to build necessary skills and strengthen Amarillo’s workforce. Employers face numerous challenges to recruit, train and retain top talent. The primary barrier for any parent in the workforce is lack of access to high-quality child care, which is an early learning program. High-quality child care can burden families across the income spectrum – especially for those with multiple young children. Eighty percent of brain growth happens in the first three years of life. During this period, skill gaps between socio-economic, racial, and ethnic groups become clearly apparent. Improving a child’s life in the earliest years with early education is critical to maintaining opportunity and potential in Amarillo. Dr. Ron Ferguson, an MIT-trained economist whose work addresses economic, social, and educational challenges, will discuss his expertise on this subject. His work takes a social-ecological saturation approach, collaborating with many partners to surround families with information and supports for parenting infants and toddlers using five clusters of parenting practices called The Basics. He has been on the faculty at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government since 1983 and faculty director of the Achievement Gap Initiative at Harvard University. Recognized as a national model for early education, Fort Worth is leading other cities in its approach to child care. Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price will share the background of their program, The National Collaborative for Infants & Toddlers, in which Tarrant County has been selected as one of three national models for early education.
